Introduction
Hindi is the most important of the 18 official languages in India. Nearly half a billion people speak some form of Hindi as their first language. As Patan is near the Western border, and is close to Pakistan, it has a fairly large number of Sindhi and Muslim population too. In present times, the spread of Television and increasing number of Hindi channels on air have made Hindi spoken almost all over India. Patan, of course, has been a place where Hindi has been loved and respected as the National Language, and our college has always seen to it that the dignity and the status of the language are maintained well. The Department of Hindi has been performing since the inception of the college. Being the Dept. of one of the important languages of the nation, it has always been at the centre of many activities. The college was very lucky to have great scholars like Dr. Harish G. Shukla, former Principal and the Head of the Dept. of Hindi, Dr. R. P. Shah, Dr. Tarabahan Sant, Dr. Dwarika Prasad Sanchihar, Dr. Badamsingh Rawat and Prof. Surekha Amin etc. who made constant efforts to see that the Dept. remains vibrant with different activities.
The credit of forming a very systematic Dept. naturally goes to Dr. Shukla, who was a very well known scholar and critic of Hindi Literature. Being a staunch follower of the Brahmakumar Isvariya Vidyalaya, he introduced a variety of cultural activities in the college for the overall development of the students. Hindi is being taught from F.Y.B. A. to M.A.—II in the college. Students love to offer Hindi as their principal subject, and the knowledge of Hindi remains very useful to them when they try to seek job or settle down outside Gujarat. It is a matter of great pride for the Dept. that it has very successfully quenched the thirst of knowledge among the students till now. The Dept. remains very lively with different activities all the year round. The Departmental colleagues have always been inspiring and motivating the students to speak Hindi, clearly and correctly too. The students who wish to settle down outside Gujarat prefer Hindi as their principal subject. Students offering Hindi at graduation perform better in the competitive examinations and find life easier when posted in other states for training.
