• History :-
The Early Days :- The Department that wins maximum laurels and brings highest credit for the college is, undoubtedly, that of Physical Education and Sports. Since its inception as ‘Sheth M.N. Science College and Shri & Shrimati P.K.Kotawala Arts College ’ in 1959 the college demonstrated its supremacy in the field of sports in Gujarat University. The college won North Zone Championship for twenty years between 1959 and 1990. The inspirational leadership of Prin.P.A.Pandya and dedication and sincerity of Physical Director Shri K.P.Patel encouraged players and athletes to perform to the maximum limits of their talent and endurance. The other Principals, Dr.H.C.Trivedi, Shri B.M.Upadhyay, Shri. N.D.Desai, Shri K.M.Patel and Others who followed Prin. P.A.Pandya realized the importance of Sports in the life of a Student and continued to provide required support and funds to the Physical Director in his mission to bring glory to the college. Shri K.P.Patel also had the co-operation of members of teaching staff from Science College and Arts College who acted as team managers for various teams and helped him, organized matches and sports events. We are proud of our sportspersons who got employed in government jobs on the basis of their sports achievements and proved their dedication in the performance of their duty. Some of our past players are at present serving the state government as Dy.S.P., Police Inspectors and revenue officers. Recently some of them have been awarded prizes by the government for their bravery and outstanding courage against criminals.
• Arts College, A New Identity :-
The bifurcation of the college in 1991 gave ‘Shri & Shrimati P.K.Kotawala Arts College’ a separate identity. When Shri K.P.Patel retired and Dr.N.H.Gamit took over as Physical Director in 1997, the college suffered a temporary set back in its sports performance for a couple of years. Young and energetic, Dr.Gamit soon got adjusted in the new environment and once again the college was on tis path of glory. Between 2000 and 2005 the college established its supremacy in Judo and Wrestling and became University Champion. The years 2004-05, 2005-06 saw various teams winning championships. The college become University Champions in Wrestling, Judo, Kho-Kho, Hockey, Volley-Ball and Athletics. Many of our players got selected in the Uni. teams and participated in Inter-University tournaments. Such has been the supremacy of our athletes that when our saffron-colored (our dress code). athlete competes in any athletic event, the other athletes have to dream of number two or three only. The college has won the General Championship of the University constantly for the last nine years. The credit for our performance also goes to the inspirational leadership of our young Principal Dr.L.S.Patel and the support our Physical Director gets from our staff members interested in sports. Like Dr.K.D.Vaishnav, Dr. B.B.Chaudhari, Dr.B.M.Desai, Prof. C.F.Chauhan, Dr. D.K.Soni. Prof. K.M.Kapasi and ad-hoc clerk Shri Naresh Thakor who work as part of our sports committee.
•Some of Our Heroes :-
The First athlete to make a mark and bring glory to the college was late Shri Ramesh C. Chauhan who in 1962 became the Individual Champion in Gujarat University Athletics. Ku.Geeta Shah, the jewel of our college, and athlete par excellence, ruled athletic meets of the university for four years in a row. She was a Champion in running, long jump and high jump. She had established new records which took years to surpass. She was also an accomplished player of Badminton, Hockey and Kho-Kho. Jayprakash Patel of our college was the first cricketer from North Gujarat to be selected as Gujarat Ranji Trophy Cricket player. Shri Ishvar Patel, late Shri Gopal Darji, Shri Jay Shankar Mehta, Shri Jagdish Shrimali, Late Shri Mahesh Nayak, Shri J.M.Patel, Shri Babaji Thakor, Ku.Geeta Rabari, Ku.Paresha Prajapati, Ku.Pravina Patel, Ku.Meena Patel, Ku.Jayeshri Vyas and many other achievers in sports arena provide inspiration to our current sportspersons and athletes to follow their foot-steps and bring credit to their college.
The performance of any college in the field of sports depends upon the talent, dedication and hard work of its Physical Director. Unless the Physical Director is devoted to his duty, he can not inspire his players to perform well. Dr. N.H.Gamit has proved his talent and his devotion to work by taking the college to greater heights in the last ten years.
• The Faculty :-
Dr. N.H.Gamit, the Physical Director, who joined this college in 1997 is one of the senior Physical Directors in the colleges affiliated to Hemchandrachayra North Gujarat University. He is a young, energetic physical director whose working hours are not limited to 11 to 5 office hours. He devotes all his time and energy to help his players and athletes achieve perfection.
I. Dr.Gamit’s academic qualification is M.P.E., Ph.D.
II. He has put up 16 years of service
III. He is also a Ph.D. guide and at present 03 (Three) students for their Ph.D., and 10 students for their M.Phil are working under him.
IV. He served as Member of Board of Sports for three Years from 2009 to 2012.
V. He has been appointed member, Board of Studies, Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University for three years 2012 to 2015.
VI. He has served on the B.P.Ed Admission Committee of H.N.G. University.
VII. He has worked as an expert in the interviews for the post of Physical Director in various colleges.
VIII. He has organized Inter-College tournaments in his college for Hockey, Judo, Kho-Kho, Tennis Badminton, Boxing, Basketball and Athletics.
IX. He has also organized West-Zone Foot Ball Tournament.
X. He has also worked in coaching camps for various games (10 in all)
XI. He has attended 3(three) Refresher Courses and 1 (one) Orientation Course.
XII. He has also rendered officiating service in Open Gujarat Cycling, Badminton, Athletics tournament and West-Zone Inter- University Tournament for Kabbadi and Foot ball.
XIII. He has published two books on Physical Fitness and Yogasana.
XIV. He has in all 10 papers published in various journals.
XV. He actively works as an observer in Uni. examinations and helps maintain discipline in the college.
• Infra-Structure available :-
Our campus is one of the oldest in North Gujarat region. The founders of the college, having foresight for the future, had acquired a large piece of land for future requirement and that has left us with enough space for playground. The Principal, Dr.L.S.Patel is a sport lover and spares funds for the development of ground and purchase of sports accessories.
I. The college has a spacious Cricket ground with a matting wicket.
II. We have one ground exclusively meant for hockey which is also used as Football when required.
III. For tennis we have one cement court.
IV. For Athletics we have a complete 400 meter track with necessary accessories for events like shot-put, javelin- throw and Pole-vault.
V. We have a Kho-Kho ground already prepared for the game.
VI. For Basket-ball we have a court with pillars and boards with mud-surface.
VII. We have a court for Volley-Ball, Net Ball and Ball-Badminton.
With strong and well-built students, a devoted and hard-working Physical Director, the most co-operative and patronizing Principal, the faculty from other department who support the Physical Director with their time and support, the college is certain to maintain the high standards of performance which it has set down the years. The record of the performance of the last Six years illustrates our success and ensures extension of our supremacy in the field of Sports in Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University.
