The area of the state known as North Gujarat is constituted of five districts : Patan, Mehsana, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha and Arvalli. Patan was formally known as Anhilpur Patan. It was established on the banks of holy river Saraswati by Vanaraj Chavda in 746 A.D. During 746 to 1411 it had been the capital city of a large kingdom extending far beyond the boundaries of present Gujarat. Under the Solanki rule, it was an important seat of Jain Scholarship. It is a land of Hemchandracharyasuri, one of the greatest monks of Jainism who contributed to the studies of grammar, literature, religion and philosophy. The Rani-Ki-Vav (Queen’s Stepwell) – a great architectural and sculptural monument is a World Heritage Sight – the lake of Shahsralinga and Siddhi Sarovar, the Jain temples of Panchasara and few other remains in and around the town testify the glory of Patan. Patan is also known for PATOLA. Patola is a unique and original handwoven texture (Saree) in the world.
